Entre-Monde (2003)

A Literature Project with Young Authors
from Central Asia and Western Europe

Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the independence of the various Central Asian states, quite a bit has changed for the authors too: Publishing almost collapsed: There are scarcely any possibilities to publish owing to a lack of marketing opportunities or because of financial reasons. The matter is particularly serious for young authors.

How are the young countries of Centralasia going to deal with their cultural position between Europe and Asia and what effects will the changes in Western Europe exercise on the developments within Centralasia?

There is a paradigmatic change not only in the former Eastern bloc but also in Western Europe, where the question of identity becomes a more serious issue. There are increasing doubts concerning the legitimacy of the USA as a model of European development. The documentation of these asio-european intermediates and the changing physical states of cultural identity shall investigate analogies as well as differences between writers of Western Europe and Centralasia.

Together with Akna Zas, an organisation running a support programme for young authors in Centralasia, we evaluate young talented writers in Usbekistan, Tadjikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan as well as in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Great Britain., Netherlands and Spain. They contribute short stories and poems selected by a jury of experts from Centralasia and Western Europe. The project comprises a publication in German and Russian as well as public readings in Centralasia and Western Europe.
